Catch Report - 24 July 2010: First & Last

It was an unusual outing as it’s my first time to set out late in the morning ... as I paddled out to sea .... I was in two minds. The wind and current was pushing me to the right but my heart says the fish are waiting for me on the left. I was lost!

My body was shouting ... "go right”.
My logical mind whispeting ... "go left”.
It took me quite a while before deciding to fight against the wind and current.

As I closed into the zone, I was rewarded with a 'paddle-size’ catfish with my first bait! I had paddle-stop-drift ...... paddle-stop-drift before the pussy took lines out from my bait caster. This kitty was no pussy as it dived repeatedly into the deep, before surfacing. What a good start! I was all motivated ... no regrets going against the elements this time.

Then it went totally quite for the next 4 hours. I drifted, anchored, trolled, changed terminal tackles, lured, replaced bait ... nothing seems to work. I kept consoling myself that at least I had a good fight already and it could have been worst!

I gave up and anchored myself near the shore. I was totally exhausted. The water was just not good, my live prawn dies within 15-20 minutes, after hooking up. I was even too tired to change the bait. I have almost given up hope for the rest of the day.

Then came a little spark ..... a fish finally took my bait - which was probably dead. “Heeeeeeee haaaaaaaa” ....... I have got a golden snapper on the hook, it was just nice for dinner.

1 good fighter + 1 dinner fish. I am good for the day!

Then the fishing suddenly came alive.  A school of herrings came by to play. It was good entertainment. “Zzzzzzz ... jump ... splash .... zzzz ... ...” All babies .... about 300-400gm ... same size ... same family. All released.

I had almost ran out of bait before another snapper came up in place of the schooling herring. This time it’s about 3/4 the size of my first catch ... a bonus here already.

A few more cast into the area before my line got stuck. I had to re-tie my terminal set but I accidentally took out the wrong size hook from the bag ... a 4/0 .. it was too big for my bait but I was too lazy to dig for another hook, so I just use it. After setting it up, I found out that the live bait well was already emptied! Blur me .... new setup ..... no more bait!

Looking around my kayak ... I found 2 dead prawns lying around. I threaded the hook into the body of the prawn and casted out. As soon as the bait hit the water ....... “Tug Tug ... the line was drifting against the current! A small prawn on a big hook ..... with a big fish ON!!!!
The fish had taken off like a train. I had to hold my rod up high in order to keep the fish away from the rocky bottoms. (at least I hoped it will) It was a full bend with lines peeling away .... on the last second bait of the day. What a finale!

As the fight dragged on ..... I prayed that my leader and line will be able to withstand the pressure.

As each burst into the deep - shorten ... my confidence grew, until .... the fish surfaced. The fish looked me in the eye and made a mad dash into the deep rocky bottom again ... it’s a big grouper! Not a pussy .... a grouper this time ........ I immediately tighten my drag and forced the fish up towards the surface again with the drag - Locked!!!! It’s a risky bet that I had to take.

The grouper surfaced and swimming in circles. As it close-in on my kayak with it’s mouth open, I lifted it up onto the yak with the lip grip, on my first attempt. Phew! My eyes brighten up with a big smile on my face.Wow! Started the day with a pussy ...... ended it with a back street thug.

Tequila! Ultimate Kayak Fishing Rod Holders Design

This is the most beautiful kayak fishing rod holders designed to fit the Tequila! in Singapore ... or maybe even in the world ..... to date. I love it.

I have extended the arm to allow the rail mounted rod holders to sit further behind me in order not to affect the paddling strokes. I could even swing the rod holder with the rod tip facing forward and quick access to the rod too!

If you plan to bring your Tequila! out fishing ..... here is an idea.

Team Tequila - Philip

Our first Team Tequila member, Philip took his yellow Tequila! out for the first time at the first Singapore’s Informal Kayak Fishing competition off Pasir Ris.

Philip who had a heart operation looks totally relaxed as he paddled for 2km across the channel to Palau Ubin.

He decided to bypassed the rest of the kayak fishing members, who had stopped to try their luck at a sunken kelong and anchor himself comfortably at drop-off, just in front of the island.

Fishing at a depth of 6m of waters ... he managed his best ever catch on a kayak since the day he started kayak fishing on a kayak. For 4 hours of fishing at a single spot ... he brought home a handsome Barramundi and a Snapper. He also had a big miss too ..... The fish brought a one way ticket to the depth before straightening his hook, as he tighten his hold on the fish.

For his effort ... he won the 2nd prize for the most valuable fish caught in the competition.

Well done Philip.

Tequila! In a small car

For all those who owns a small car and wonder if the Tequila could fit into the tiny space, I hope this will help.

We have managed to load a single Tequila into a Kia Picanto ... one of the smallest hatchback in town. I would assume that it should fit the Honda Jazz, Mitsubishi Colt or similar hatchback cars.

Adding another member to Team Tequila Singapore!

Paddle Stickers

With the sales of a couple of kayaks .... it is time to give back.

I have designed and printed a water resistance kayak fishing paddle sticker , complete with premium UV ink and gloss laminated finish. I have included brands and logos of all supporters who have contributed into the kayak fishing community, as a token of appreciation.

This premium will be given away FREE for all who attends the beach barbecue cum fishing event with their kayaks on 4th July 2010. Pasir Ris beach.

Anyone who is keen to know more about kayak fishing ... you are welcome to join us for a casual session.

Airis Tandem for inflatable Kayak Fishing

As there is a worldwide shortage of the popular Airis Angler 12, I have been looking around at the Airis family on which model is a worthy replacement.

The Airis Tandem makes a perfect fit with exception to the lack of rod holders in it’s design .... but what the hack ... rod holders are the easiest things to add. Look around us .... all the rest of the inflatable kayaks are without original rod holders and it didn’t stop angler from using them as a fishing kayak through some modification.

Here are the benefits ...  the tandem is designed to carry more weight, we could safely carry more gears when needed for an overnight expedition and we could use more space too! Plus the bonus of bringing a friend along.

Airis .... at 6.5 PSI .....  it is technically one of the best inflatable in the world .... you just gotta love it!

Here is an artist impression on how I would fit up the Airis Tandem for fishing.

Simply love the space!

The Airis Tandem retails at a special price of S$2499, includes 2 sets of paddles and seats!
